You can now describe your business to an AI tool and get a website back in minutes. For many small businesses, that's a sensible place to start. It's quick and it costs very little.
A site that looks finished can still lose you enquiries, though. This guide covers what AI website builders do well and what they tend to miss. It also explains what to do if you've already built your site with one.
What AI website builders do well
AI builders are good at the parts of a website that follow a pattern. In a few minutes they can give you:
- a clean layout with the usual sections
- a colour scheme and fonts that sit well together
- placeholder copy for each page
- a site that works on phones
If you need a simple online presence quickly, that's real value. A sole trader who just needs a phone number and a list of services may never need more.
What AI can't know about your business
An AI builder only knows what you type into it. It answers the brief it's given. Most business owners haven't written that brief down, because they've never needed to.
A useful website starts with a few questions:
- Who are your best clients?
- What worries them before they get in touch?
- Why do they pick you over someone else?
- What do you want each visitor to do next?
The answers decide what your pages say and in what order. Get them wrong and the site can look great while speaking to nobody in particular.
Fortify Stock is a good example. The business works with property investors and landlords. It also offers stays for people travelling for work. Their old site never mentioned landlords at all. An AI tool would have rebuilt that site faster and with better photos. It would still have left landlords out, because nobody had told it they mattered. Finding that gap was the most valuable part of the project.
What AI builds often miss
These are the gaps I see most often when I look at an AI-built site.
Copy that sounds like you
AI copy reads smoothly. It also reads like everyone else's. Visitors notice, and so do search engines. Good copy uses facts about your business that a competitor couldn't claim. Those details are what build trust.
The systems behind the pages
A website is often where enquiries and bookings start. Those need to connect to the tools you already use. A form that drops enquiries into a personal inbox is a weak link. So is a booking process that relies on back-and-forth emails.
Privacy and cookie rules
UK businesses need a clear privacy policy. If your site uses analytics or marketing cookies, visitors must be able to accept or refuse them first. AI builders often add a banner that looks right but doesn't actually block anything.
Accessibility
About 16 million people in the UK are disabled. That's nearly one in four (GOV.UK). A site built to WCAG 2.2 AA works for them too. That covers heading structure and colour contrast. It also means every form and menu works with a keyboard. AI builders rarely check all of this.
Search and AI visibility
More people now ask AI tools for recommendations instead of searching Google. Both favour pages that are well structured and specific. If you're replacing an old site, redirects matter too. Without them, you can lose the search traffic you already have.
A site you can edit
You'll want to update prices and add new work. That's easy when the content is set up properly. It's frustrating when every change means going back to the AI and hoping it doesn't break something else.
Someone accountable
When something stops working, you need someone who understands how the site was built. An AI tool can't take a phone call or own a problem.
Already built your site with AI?
Good. You've done the quick part, and you have something to work from. Here's how a web designer can help from there.
A website review
I check your site against the gaps above. You get a plain list of what to fix, in order of impact. If the site is already doing its job, I'll tell you. Read about the website review.
Finish and fix
Keep what works and fix what doesn't. You keep the speed and saving you got from the AI build. I add the planning and technical work that turn it into a business tool.
Move to a platform you can grow on
Some AI builders are hard to extend or edit. If you've outgrown yours, I can rebuild the site in Webflow. Redirects keep your existing search traffic, and you get training so you can edit it yourself.
Ongoing care
A website needs regular attention to keep bringing in work. That means watching search data and keeping content up to date. Privacy and accessibility rules change too. I offer this month to month, so you don't have to think about it.
Is your AI-built site doing its job?
Ask yourself these questions. If you answer no to more than two, your site is probably costing you work.
- Does your homepage say who you help within five seconds?
- Would your best client recognise themselves on it?
- Does the copy include facts only your business could say?
- Do enquiries reach a system you check every day?
- Can visitors refuse cookies before any tracking starts?
- Can you use the whole site with a keyboard alone?
- Does your business appear when you search for what you do and where?
- Can you update a price without help?
Want a second opinion?
AI has made a first draft cheap. Turning that draft into a site that wins work still takes experience. If you'd like an honest view of your site, book a website review. I'll tell you what's worth fixing first.
